Visual Studio Code
Visual Studio Code Overview:
Visual Studio Code, announced at the 2015 Build conference, is a proprietary freeware code editor distributed by Microsoft. It supports languages like C++, Python, and Java, using the Monaco editor component from Azure DevOps. With basic support for common languages, it can be extended through extensions for new languages, themes, and debuggers. Visual Studio Code Insiders offers nightly builds, separate from the standard configuration, leading to its high adoption rate among developers.
Visual Studio Code Reception and Rankings:
Ranked highly in developer surveys, Visual Studio Code secured the No. 1 spot in 2018, 2019, 2021, and 2022 surveys. Despite not being covered in the 2020 survey, it maintained its popularity. Additionally, it faced controversies like the CEC-IDE incident in June 2023 when it was discovered that CEC-IDE was a rebranded release of Visual Studio Code without the required MIT license.
Visual Studio Code Features and Development:
Supporting debugging for Linux apps, Visual Studio Code is an open-source editor with a user-friendly interface built on Google’s Chromium. It reached half a million users by Version 1, offering tools for debugging JavaScript projects and developing Progressive Web Apps (PWAs). With support for hundreds of languages and the ability to create language servers, it is extensible through managing extensions, making it a popular choice among developers.
