Windows IoT

Windows IoT Overview: Windows IoT, formerly known as Windows Embedded, encompasses a range of operating systems tailored for embedded devices. With the introduction of Windows 10 editions, Windows IoT offers specialized subfamilies to cater to different types of embedded systems. Azure Sphere, a newer addition to the ecosystem, runs on a Linux kernel and targets secure IoT solutions. Windows IoT is accessible to OEMs and volume license customers, focusing on applications in kiosks, real-time devices, and various embedded systems.

Windows IoT Enterprise: Windows IoT Enterprise aligns closely with Windows 10 Enterprise, tailored specifically for embedded devices. It maintains binary compatibility with Windows 10 Enterprise while incorporating minor adjustments to better suit the requirements of embedded systems. Notably, Windows 10 IoT Mobile has ceased support since January 14, 2020, emphasizing the transition towards more robust solutions like Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC, which offers extended support compared to its non-embedded counterpart.

Windows IoT Core: Positioned as the successor to Windows Embedded Compact, Windows 10 IoT Core is optimized for smaller, cost-effective industry devices. It is freely available for hobbyist use on platforms like Raspberry Pi, with the option of Windows 10 IoT Core Pro for enhanced update control through distributors. This variant caters to the evolving landscape of embedded technologies, offering a streamlined and efficient operating system for a diverse range of IoT applications.
